Annual Events
At the United Church of Schellsburg, we have many activities that our membership enjoys. We open our doors to the
community to take part in these activies and know the joy we have in celebrating God’s love and promise He has for
all His children.
Women’s Society Easter Egg Making
The largest fund raiser at our church is the Women’s
Society Easter egg sales. Beginning in early February
we begin taking orders for these delicious peanut
butter and coconut eggs. There is a job for everyone
from 4 yrs old to 100+. Friday evenings are set aside
for making the filling and Saturdays are for molding,
coating, trimming and wrapping the eggs. We
welcome community volunteers and love when the
children of the church bring their friends to help.
Our kitchen is state certified. And we have members
on staff who hold current food handler certificates.
Orders can be placed with members or by calling the
church office.
Easter Egg Hunt
This program is organized by our Christian Education
committee and is an event our Youth Group takes the
most credit in running the show. The Youth Group
members look foward to selecting the candy and
prizes, filling the eggs (over 500 for sure), grouping
prizes by age group and then HIDING THE EGGS ALL
OVER THE LAWN of the Schellsburg Community Park.
The EASTER BUNNY always stops by too!
And because hunting for eggs is tough work, we
thank all the volunteers who bring baked goods and
drinks. During inclement weather we don’t let down
the little ones - we hold the egg hunt in the church
building.
Chili Cook-Off
Held in late October each year is our annual Chili
Cook-Off. 2019 was our 13th annual and was a
success. This event hosts All-You-Can-Eat Chili and
Cornbread for $5 a person. For your enjoyment we
have door prizes and basket raffles going on during
the 11:30 to 2pm supper. Come as you are on a
beautiful fall afternoon in the quaint town of
Schellsburg. We enjoy visting with passerbys who
have stopped in while in the area taking in the fall
foliage. The Women’s Society hosts a bake sale in
case you’d like a little desert with your lunch or a
beautiful delicious pie for dinner. Kids have a good
time as well. Can’t go wrong with a good bowl of chili.
Door prizes are given out all during the event and
baskets winners are selected at the end of the event.
We’ll call you if you’ve won, but had to be on your
way. We appreciate you supporting our event for
funding our missions.
Hanging of the Greens - Community Caroling
This is a wonderful experience to visit our church and
enjoy the afternoon in Schellsburg. Come join us for
our worship service which is the annual Advent Play
put on by our youth. Each year our Director finds a
new play keeping in mind the age and numbers of
our youth. Because of this we can expect a new play
and twist on the advent theme from contemporary to
historic.
Afterwards we have the hanging of the greens where
we decorate the entire church inside and out to
reflect the excitement of the celebration of the birth
of Jesus. While those of us are decorating there are
just as many others in the kitchen preparing the
banquet of casseroles, salads, sweets and desserts
for the brunch. There’s plenty to go around for all
guests.
Finally, take a quick trip home and be back in town for
the decorating of the Schellsburg town tree hosted by
the Schellsburg and Old Log Church Historical Society.
Santa is there to listen with great joy the wishes of
children. Hot chocolate, coffee and delicious treats
await all who come and help with decorating the tree.
Join in with the members of the United Church of
Schellsburg to sing Christmas carols both reverent
and fun. Stay for the main event when they honor a
long standing member of the area and learn of their
life, talents, and remembrances of times of the past.
Who will it be this year?
